First, let me say we love this mattress. We replaced the original mattress that came with the futon when I bought it in 2003. Also, you need to understand that this mattress is made by WOlf but sold under the Serta brand name. If you want to do research, look up the Wolf products. The mattress is firm enough to be comfortable to sleep on for a big guy (I weigh about 240) and yet still pliable enough to be used in couch configuration, which is where ours primarily lives. Outstanding product. Be aware, as other reviews state, that it will come compressed in a box, so leave about the first 24 hours for it to expand naturally.

The mattress is firm but not hard. My biggest issue is that it was wound up so tight in the packaging it's killed a little bit of the thickness. It says 8 inches, it is closer to 5 except the very most corners.
Past that it sleeps well and well very well made. Kind of an odd smell from the packaging but it faded in a few days.
